Flu Prevention with Traditional Nutrition Wisdom

As we enter that time of year when the flu becomes more prevalent, it's important to remember that you have more control over your health than you may think. The strength and integrity of your immune system, which largely resides in your gut, not only determines if you'll get the flu but also how severe it will be if you do.This brings us to the exciting world of gut-nourishing and immune-boosting foods!

Consider incorporating natural remedies like the master tonic, commonly known as fire cider, into your daily regimen. This potent elixir is a blend of herbs and spices that are anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-parasitic, and anti-fungal. Just a tablespoon a day can help fortify your immune system and protect your body against the flu. We just whipped up a gallon sized jar for our home and encourage you to make some, too! Here's a master tonic recipe to inspire you!

I also encourage you to up your intake of bone broth to 1-2 cups daily. This nourishing elixir is rich in essential nutrients like collagen, amino acids used to produce antibodies that fight infection, and proline which has antiviral properties. If you're not keen on making your own bone broth, then I highly recommend FOND bone broth as a store-bought substitute. They use grass-fed and pasture-raised bones sourced from regenerative farms and are the best on the market. They're also based in Texas.

And let's not overlook the magic of ferments! Foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi are packed with probiotics that can help maintain a healthy gut flora that is essential for a well-regulated immune system. Again, if you're not keen on making your own, then opt for brands like Bubbies, Wallaby, or my favorite local company, Mother Culture.

Last but not least, I want to call out the elephant in the room – flu season coincides perfectly with the sugar-filled holidays and sugar is a proven immune suppressant. If you desire to stay healthy through “flu season”, it's imperative that you keep your intake of refined carbohydrates and sugar to an all time low. Focus on foods that are savory and nourishing, not sweet and addictive, and you will be better off than most.

We understand the challenge of maneuvering holidays when you’re in the process of healing or creating a new lifestyle. If you need support and accountability through the holidays, book a discovery call and learn how we can support you.
